Iglanced around the room, ensuring no one else could hear us. "Charlie, I need to look in Isabella's room," I whispered urgently.
He blinked, confusion clouding his eyes. "What? That's a terrible idea."
I grabbed his arm, pulling him closer so our conversation remained private. "I need you to distract her."
"Now?" His voice rose slightly, drawing a few curious glances from nearby guests.
"Oh, come now," I said, rolling my eyes. "You're supposed to be charming."
He scowled, crossing his arms over his chest. "Charming or not, this is risky, Lizzie. What if she catches you?"
"She won't if you do your part right." I squeezed his arm, trying to instill some confidence in him.
Charlie ran a hand through his hair, clearly torn. "And what exactly do you think you'll find in her room?"
"I don't know," I admitted. "But there has to be something that can help us understand what's really going on."
He sighed heavily, looking around the room as if searching for a way out of this predicament. Finally, he relented. "Fine. But if we get caught, you're explaining this to Bennet. He'll ring me up the mast if anything happened to you."
"Deal," I agreed quickly.
We moved closer to where Isabella stood, still engaged in conversation with another guest. Charlie took a deep breath and plastered on one of his most charming smiles before approaching her.
"Miss Musgrave," he greeted her warmly, bowing slightly. "I couldn't help but notice how radiant you look today."
Isabella turned towards him, a flicker of surprise crossing her face before she composed herself. "Thank you, Mr. Fletcher," she replied politely.
Charlie continued to engage her in light conversation, drawing her attention away from me as I slipped past unnoticed. My heart pounded in my chest as I made my way towards the stairs leading to the upper floor.
Each step felt like an eternity as I ascended the staircase and navigated through the hallway until I found Isabella's door. I glanced back one last time to ensure no one had followed me before gently turning the knob and slipping inside.
The room was neat and orderly. My eyes scanned the space quickly, looking for anything out of place or unusual that might provide some insight into Mr. Musgrave's dealings.
As I began my search, the muffled sounds of Charlie's voice continued downstairsâa reminder that my time was limited and every second counted.
The space felt stifling, a sharp contrast to the opulent parlor below. Isabella's chamber was an epitome of order and elegance, with each piece of furniture meticulously placed. A heavy mahogany bed draped in deep burgundy velvet dominated one side of the room, while a matching vanity adorned with delicate lace and an array of glass perfume bottles stood near the window. The air smelled faintly of lavender and sandalwood, a calming but oddly incongruous scent given the tension surrounding her.
I moved cautiously, aware that any misplaced item could betray my intrusion. My eyes swept over a tall wardrobe, its doors slightly ajar to reveal an array of immaculately arranged gowns. I resisted the urge to search through them, knowing my time was limited.
